    Instagram post 2341741551484542632_1381756087 #Repost @jessrobin96 with @make_repost ・・・ In the summer of 1919, called The Red Summer, occurred after troops returned from World War 1, which included 380,000 Black veterans. These veterans were targeted in racists attacks because they were seen as a threat to Jim Crow and racial subordination. During this time more than 1 million Black Americans traveled north, from the south, for more economic opportunities. Between 1910-1920, Chicago grew by 148% and Philadelphia by 500% creating massive anxiety among white people in northern cities that Black people were taking housing, jobs and #security from them. White sailors, recently home from the war, had been in days-long drunken rampage, assaulting and in some cases lynching Black people. This escalated in dozens cities throughout the US that would become known as the Red Summer. Between April-November of 1919, approximately 25 riots, 97 recorded lynchings, and a three day long massacre in Elaine, Arkansas, where over 200 black men, women and children were killed after black sharecroppers tried to organize for better working conditions. President Wilson didn’t take any action and throughout the country the police refused to arrest anyone for these crimes. Ironically, the Treaty of Versailles was #signed on #June28th, 1919, solidifying the #peacetreaty that bought WW1 to an end. 💫 One of these #RedSummer attacks occurred in #July3rd in Brisbee, AZ (Brisbee Riot) where Buffalo Soldiers from the 10th Calvary and local police forces got it into a street battle after an altercation; 50 Buffalo soldiers were arrested; 5-8 seriously injured. 💫Exactly 50 years later, #Stonewall Riot (Uprising) took place, #June28th-#July3rd, 1969 in NYC after NYPD raided Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement. This was the catalyst for the LGBTQ+ movement we know today. Marsha P. Johnson was a prominent figure and activist.

I had planned to talk about how COVID had been a blessing in disguise as it had allowed me to thrive in my personal life as well as in the communications and culture work I do.
